Doesn't matter if it's right or not, it just is. Not close to dead. Not almost dead. His political life is not on it's death bed. It is dead. It cannot be any more dead than it already is. You can stab it with paternity and it will still be dead. It cannot be resurrected with a negative paternity test. Edwards has already gone away. If you supported him, financially or otherwise, he betrayed you. A paternity test my provide a precise measurement of that betrayal. But to what end? Any insistence that he has anything left to prove is fruitless beyond a personal satisfaction that has nothing to do with politics.

Is your argument that Edwards behavior is going to "clintonize" Obama like Gore was clintonized?

If it's his kid and the $114,000 was in lieu of child support, he should fess up.

But if it's not his kid, what should he do?  Go down and have a DNA sample taken with the press present and put the issue back on Hunter?

My sense is that Obama will not be affected by this because he and Edwards did not collaborate in governing in the way that Clinton and Gore did.  But I have been wrong before on issues like this. (I thought the purple heart bandaid campaign was so over the top that it would hurt Bush.)

when Edwards dropped out and all the speculation was on who he would endorse.  He was pursued right away by Clinton.  Obama got together with him a week or so later. Elisabeth said Obama was aloof.  I wonder if it was because Obama knew the truth about this and was unwilling to offer Edwards a leading roll.

...I've been starting to notice McCain is getting the upper hand on Obama.

McCain's hit him hard with ad after ad after ad.  Granted, they all suck, but the overall tone is out there:  Barack Obama is a wet-behind-the-ears lightweight who will be a bad president.  

I've yet to see a single ad from Obama hitting the old gremlin back on ANY of this shit.  Yeah, they release statements and set up websites and shit....and it doesn't do a goddamn bit of good.  Know the only people who read that stuff?  PEOPLE LIKE US.

Joe and Jane Doe do not give an everloving shit about what website Barack Obama has set up to debunk McCain's lies.  But they DO know what they've seen on the teevee during the Olympics.

People can blame the media's mendacity and corruption all they want, but the bottom line is this:  I'm beginning to suspect Barack Obama's campaign team is an inept as John Kerry's.  I mean, the guy has raised more money than God, where's it all going?

I see the endless parade of personal anecdotes, "I met a man/woman who used to be a Republican/non-voter until they saw/heard/read of the latest thing John McCain said/did.  They used to be suspicious of Barack Obama, but now they will vote for him five times and send him eleven billion dollars and name all their children after him."

I see an inability to step back and see how things look outside Blogtopia(y! sctp!).  Does anyone remember the infamous "Wolves" ad the Bush campaign ran in mid-to-late October 2004?  It had a narrator talking about terrorists being out there over shots of wolves lurking about in a dark, wintery forest?  We all laughed at it.  But I remember reading after the election that according to research that ad was fucking EFFECTIVE.  And just today, I see Georgia10 wasted an entire frontpage post about fucking YOUTUBE stats between McCain and Obama.  As.  If.  That.  Matters.

I see the same smug confidence of "Man, the Republican candidate is so lousy/old/stupid/whatever that our guy will win by default just because he can stand up straight and speak coherently!"

I also see anyone who tries to point this out labeled a concern troll and ignored.

Of course all this happened right before the epic disaster that was the 2004 presidential election.

because I think it makes a lot of sense...

But -- Obama is more likely to get young voters, right, and McCain attracts seniors like a $4.95 early bird buffet, is that true?

And the kids I know -- that crop of young first time voters -- go to the internet, not fox news or the newspapers or the network news -- which means that presumably Obama's use of the internet may be more useful than we are thinking.

BTW - most of those kids I know -- friends of my son's -- are inexplicably Republican.  Yeah.  Stuns the hell outta me, too...BUT.  If Obama has the better strategy and gets the information out there on the internet better and with more youth  appeal, it may be reaching kids who would never go vote for that old fart, but just might go vote for Obama.

I don't know, just wondering out loud.  Feel free to (nicely would be preferred, thank you very much) tell me what I am missing.  Cause I really didn't put much thought into it at all...

Obama 2012.  Because he didn't piss off enough people the first time around.

I blogged that there was no way he would do that. his wife is so wonderful. I always liked her better than him anyway. he lied about the affair and he's probably lying about the timing. he is most likely the birth father. one lie leads to another. so I guess Elizabeth Edwards is standing by her man. I feel bad for her and her children but she should leave his ass. she's sick with cancer and working her ass off to make him President and he can't keep his dick in his pants. why can't men just take things into their "own hands". why? I know this is hard for you Maryscott. my husband and my sister supported Edwards too.

you're right.  He was very open in the interview about wanting people NOT to know what occured.  Kind of a bait and switch method.  A lawyer's way around things.  I'll be honest about my desire to lie to to you but I'm honest because I just did that.  

I could tell you something I experienced first hand during the run-up to the NH Primary in 2004 that would portray to you what this guy is all about but why bother.  

He admitted to be a Narcissist.  Trust me, he is.  Doesn't mean part of him isn't a flawed true believer but alas I never believed it.  

In the final analysis, he's no Bill Clinton.  President Clinton was a whore with a heart of Gold.  Edwards isn't the later.  Sadly.

wouldn't it be terrific if scores of pregnant young women now stepped forward to say that they had affairs with Edwards while he was on the campaign trail.  

I imagine, with glee, that from Columbia, SC, to Walla Wall, WA, we hear tales of Edwards' sexual prowess and unquenchable lust!

Campaign staffers start coming forward, telling stories of Edwards hitting sorority houses in college towns and picking up women in local bars.

In fact, maybe the only reason that Edwards even went into politics was for the sexual opportunities that power creates.

I also think that Edwards has made himself entirely irrelevant.  There's nothing left, really, but his persecution.

I feel sorry for the guy.  Not as sorry as I am for his wife, but, nonetheless.

I think that if he broke any laws than he should be prosecuted and the rest of it is between his family and his self.

But, yeah, we definitely dodged a bullet with this guy.  Can you imagine the absolute joy in Republican quarters were Edwards the nominee?

I don't know. I was never particularly enamored of Edwards.  I liked him on economic issues, considered backing him, but never did. MLW endorsed Edwards, but I never really did.  I actually liked Dodd before I moved to Barack.

Let's face it, most of these guys don't have the face or the body that would give them a second look in a bar if they didn't have one or two things: money and/or power.

And that includes most of the rock stars who are screwing the groupies.

This is no one's business except the people directly involved. The mother's decision cannot be challenged in any way. It's her child, her privacy and her life. No one -- NO ONE -- has any right to demand that she submit to any kind of testing at all. Why are you on the side of those who are hounding her about this for the slimy political advantage that might accrue to them?

From a purely political standpoint, I don't really see how this affects Obama. He and his wife seem to have a rock solid marriage. Any discussion of cheating only brings up McCain's own history, along with the the long list of notable Republicans who have indulged in various forms of common but socially disapproved private behavior, as well more serious deviations such as pedophilia, rape and sexual harassment.

The whole issue of cheating as a symptom of lack of moral character is utterly despicable and totally phony. People cheat and when they cheat they typically lie about it. That's just human behavior. When I cheated, I lied about it (or used truth in a deceptive way). When my partners cheated on me, they lied about it.

As I have said on many occasions, shame is the most powerful tool of social repression. It's certainly enabled the GOP to carry out their war against individual freedom. I don't really understand why you would want to help ratify that power, and I am a little disappointed that you would jump into the shame and blame game like this. I think that you should calm down and reflect on this. You are wrong.

...to ram home the point. And that's why he lost. Clinton's popularity was never affected by Monicagate. If I recall correctly it was in the high 60s during the scandal. His motorcade was cheered by warmly appreciative throngs.

Gore would obviously have made a much better president than Bush, but he was not a very effective candidate. Picking Lieberman, a Jew in a yarmulke, as his running mate, cost him the border states, including his home state of Tennessee. Both Gore and Lieberman were prigs. Bush was kind of a swinger. The conventional wisdom on all this is utterly wrong.

I strongly believe that the baby is his. I believe that DNA will prove it to be true. I believe his story about the timeline will be proved a lie.

I believe the rent on the home she was provided will be proved exorbitant, and paid for by a private contributor.

Investigators are even now finding that proof. These are criminal matters, Jules.

He has lied to the American people, about matters that were happening while he was running for national office.

This is serious business, and it is affecting the election.

You are arguing from rumors. You don't know that campaign funds were involved in any illegal way at all. You can strongly believe anything you want, but that doesn't make it true or relevant. You can't demonstrate that it is affecting the election in any way. John Edwards is not running for office. The best thing you could do would be to just get off it and stop lending fire to the enemy.

When you remove a bandage, you yank it off quickly.

That's what Edwards needs to do.  He needs to get all his bad stuff out there, I don't care if he has to announce that he's buggering little boys. Just get it out there, and get it over with.

Because if the bad news dribbles out over the course of weeks or months, it overshadows the campaign.  But if Edwards reveals everything in one press conference, then the story will dominate for maybe a week.  And then disappear along with the next white girl on vacation in the Caribbean.
